Variety

An aspect of a coin's design that sets it apart from other coins in the same series. Two examples would be the 1854 $20 gold double eagle Large Date and Small Date varieties.

VDB

The initials of Victor D. Brenner, designer of the Lincoln cent. Controversy erupted with the prominent display of the initials on the 1909 Lincoln cent. As a result, the initials were removed. In 1918, the VDB was returned to the Lincoln cent in a less conspicuous area at the bottom of Lincoln’s shoulder.
