Complete Set of Gold $20 Type 1 Double Eagles

About the Coin

At the start of 1854 in San Francisco, the U.S. Assay Office had been discontinued and no other private mint were producing coins. The new U.S. mint had not yet begun operations and businesses were clamoring for someone to produce coins.

The company Kellogg & Richter answered the call in February 1854 by producing Kellogg & Co. $20 gold pieces. Later that year, the company was reorganized as Kellogg & Humbert and continued to produce $20 gold in 1855 even though the new U.S. Mint had begun producing coins.

This example from The Arlington Collection has very nice eye appeal for the grade. Although not necessarily rare in AU-58, this coin is definitely hard to find this nice with original coloring and surfaces.
