2012 London Olympics Gold Coin Series Gallery

About the coins

The official 2012 London Olympics Gold Coin Series struck by the Royal Mint consists of nine 22k gold coins (three £100 one-ounce coins and six £25 quarter-ounce coins). They emphasize the Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger."

The obverse of each gold coin features the standard portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Designed by sculptor John Bergdahl, each reverse features a Roman god paired with an Olympic sport. "Citius" pairs the god Diana with Cycling, Neptune with Sailing and Mercury with Running. "Altius" pairs Apollo with Gymnastics, Jupiter with Diving and Juno with Pole Vaulting. "Fortius" pairs Mars with Boxing, Vulcan with the Hammer Throw and Minerva with Javelin.
