About the Coin At the start of 1854 in San Francisco, the U.S. Assay Office had been discontinued and no other private mint were producing coins. The company Kellogg & Richter answered the call in February 1854 by producing Kellogg & Co. $20 gold pieces. Later that year, the company was reorganized as Kellogg & Humbert and continued to produce $20 gold in 1855 even though the new U.S. Mint had begun producing coins. This example from The Arlington Collection has very nice eye appeal for the grade.
