The Arlington Collection of Shipwreck Treasure
About the Coin You're probably thinking, "Why did you pick this ugly coin to display?" It's definitely the coin in The Arlington Collection that has seen the worst preservation of its surfaces. I've displayed this coin in order to show the difference between this coin and the SS Republic Seated Liberty half dollars that were recovered from that wreck. Even though the SS Republic coins are designated as "Shipwreck Effect" by NGC, they are in superb condition compared to simiar coins from other shipwrecks. The S.S. Central America shipwreck is famous for it's hoard of thousands of mint state gold $20 double eagles and large gold ingots. Little is ever said about the silver coins recovered from the wreck. You can read all the books on the shipwreck, and it's only the gold that's ever pictured and written about. There may be the occasional referrence to the Chilean silver coins that were recovered, but U.S. silver coins are never mentioned. But U.S. silver coins were found in the wreck. Unfortunately, the U.S. silver coins did not fare as well as the gold. The pictured coin at the left is a Seated Liberty quarter dollar recovered from the wreck and authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS. The exact date could not be determined as only the first three digits of 184 are visible. Close examination of this coin does reveal a faint image of Liberty and her shield. The reverse is in better condition and you can clearly see most of the eagle and letters. So when you see a shipwreck coin that has been well preserved, you can now appreciate how lucky that coin must have been to survive the brutal environment that the coin must have been subjected to.
