About the Coin

The Capped Bust half dime was struck from 1829 through 1837. The Capped Bust type was only minted at the Philadelphia mint. The 1837 coin comes in two major varieties, the "Small 5c" and "Large 5c" of which the "Small 5c" appears to be the scarcer of the two.

This example from The Arlington Collection is of the Large 5c variety. It has beautiful natural pastel colored toning on both the obverse and reverse.

Designer: William Kneass

Weight: 1.35 grams

Diameter: approx. 15.5mm, reeded edge
